The Electron Temperature in Ionized Nebulae
نویسنده
چکیده
We discuss the role of the electron temperature in abundance determinations in ionized nebulae (planetary nebulae and giant H II regions). We show that, even when observations provide a direct estimate of T e, abundance determinations may sometimes be significantly in error for reasons other than hypothetical temperature fluctuations or uncertainties in ionization correction factors, and we show striking examples both in the high and the low metallicity regimes. On the other hand, even without a direct measure of Te and under certain conditions, it is possible to give rough estimates (or limits) on the abundances, both in GHRs and in PNe. Although the main mechanisms determining the electron temperature in ionized nebulae have been known for half a century, we emphasize that there are still important problems to be solved. Finally, we advocate for a different description of temperature inhomogeneities than the scheme generally used.

The Temperature Structure in Ionized Nebulae and the Chemical Evolution of Galaxies
A few results that indicate the presence of temperature variations in gaseous nebulae are reviewed. The evidence is based on: a) temperatures derived from different methods, and b) on comparisons of abundances predicted by models of galactic chemical evolution with abundances derived from observations.
متن کاملFilling factors and ionized masses in planetary nebulae
We calculate filling factors (ε) and ionized masses (Mi) for a total of 84 galactic and extragalactic planetary nebulae (PNe) at known distances. To do these calculations, from the equation of energy propagation within a gaseous nebula, we have chosen forbidden line electron densities, observed angular diameters, and Hβ fluxes, from the most recent measurements available in the literature. Stat...
متن کاملIonization Structure and Spectra of Iron in Gaseous Nebulae
The emission spectra and the ionization structure of the low ionization stages of iron, Fe I–IV, in gaseous nebulae are studied. This work includes: (i) new atomic data: photoionization cross sections, total e-ion recombination rates, excitation collision strengths, and transition probabilities calculated under the Iron Project by the Ohio State atomic-astrophysics group; (ii) detailed study of...
متن کاملGalactic Planetary Nebulae with Wolf-rayet Nuclei Iii. Kinematical Analysis of a Large Sample of Nebulae
Expansion velocities (Vexp) of different ions and line widths at the base of the lines are measured and analyzed for 24 PNe with [WC]-type nuclei (WRPNe), 9 PNe ionized by WELS (WLPNe) and 14 ordinary PNe. A comparative study of the kinematical behavior of the sample clearly demonstrates that WRPNe have in average 40-45% larger Vexp, and possibly more turbulence than WLPNe and ordinary PNe. WLP...
متن کامل3D Reconstruction of Emission and Absorption in Planetary Nebulae
This paper addresses the problem of reconstructing the 3D structure of planetary nebulae from 2D observations. Assuming axial symmetry, our method jointly reconstructs the distribution of dust and ionized gas in the nebulae from observations at two different wavelengths. In an inverse rendering framework we optimize for the emission and absorption densities which are correlated to the gas and d...
